Family Secrets Lies & Alibi’s-Another Great Review

Family By Any Other Name 3.5 Stars- Apooo Review
By     Angelia Menchan “acvermen.blogspot.com”

Family, Secrets, Lies and Alibis by Nanette Buchanan introduces us to D.Q., a man with two families. For over thirty years he takes care of his wife, Tonya, and their children. At the same time he is providing for his mistress, Nikki, and their son Rell, while actually living in both households. Rell is under the impression that his dad walks on water and can do no wrong. His dad has been there all his life, only missing when he was working at night. An argument Rell overhears in his early twenties exposes his father’s double life, causing Rell to relocate to get away from the lies. The family he always thought he had was nothing but hidden secrets.

When D.Q dies, Rell, as the executor of the will, is summoned home. Nikki was separated from D.Q for years but remained in contact with him. Tonya, on the other hand stayed married to D.Q. even with the knowledge of Nikki and Rell and feels that the death of her estranged husband will be her comeuppance. His money should be there for her in ways her husband never was. What she does not know is that D.Q. has surprises for all of them, especially Rell.

Rell’s discovery of all of the lies and skeletons sends him on a path to discovery, while at the same time causing him to create secrets and alibis of his own. Family, Secrets, Lies and Alibis is a face-paced read full of interesting story lines. Occasionally the story seems improbable but does not stop the book from being interesting and entertaining. I recommend this novel to those who enjoy contemporary fiction filled with drama.

Who Is Being Cheated If They Know???

The Phone Call

I got a phone call today.
The caller asked for me by name.
Stating her need to clear any confusion
brought on by you and your love games.

She said if I allowed myself to listen just for a moment or two.
Without interruption, questions and accusations,
we both would know what to do about our love for you.

I agreed hesitantly, though curious
I was eager and willing to hear
I braced myself wondering, what could it be?
What did I have to fear?

She talked clearly, her conversation was pleasant.
As she shared her memories of your accomplishments,
dreams, and your wedding vows.
She got emotional excusing herself often explaining,
losing her lifelong mate to me would not be allowed.

As I took the time to digest her news of being your loving wife,
I thought of our accomplishments, dreams and your promises.
To be with me the rest of your life.

She went on to say as your family grew.
You became an attentive husband and father one who was full of pride.
As I heard her express her love for the children, her love for you.
I slowly began to cry.

I thought I couldn’t hold my words any longer,
but I did as she described how your affection for her seemed unchanged.
She heard you on the phone one night whispering,
laughing and calling my name.

She said it didn’t stop there you had an excuse for the call.
She understood you wouldn’t tell the truth until your back was against the wall.

You left careless clues, our created memories.
They became definite signs.
Your wife confirmed her suspicions.
You and I shared a love together for quite some time.

As she promised her conversation wasn’t long.
She even apologized, assuming calling me may have been wrong.

As the tears rolled down my face, my anger caused me to just stare.
She called my name repeatedly asking was I still there.

I didn’t know what to say or how to respond.
But I knew that asking her name couldn’t do any harm.

She said, “Call me Mrs. Nobody, for that is how I feel
and you are doomed to be the next Mrs. Nobody if you don’t find a love that’s real.”

New Author, New Drama- An Interview with Author Nanette M. Buchanan

Filed under: books, author, african american author, suspensful roma — Nanette Buchanan @ 12:37 pm

Q. Tell me about yourself…
A. I am a wife, and a mother of three children. My husband and I are blessed for they are all doing quite well, married and are parents. I have four grandchildren and I am awaiting the birth of my son’s first child, due this month. I have always been an advocate for children and after working with children for more than twenty years, as a Track Coach and various community programs in Newark, New Jersey, I decided to work and promote programs that would help prevent our youth from falling victim to the judicial system. I began working as a Senior Corrections Officer for the State of New Jersey. After ten years of working inside the State institutions I accepted the position of Instructor at the Training Academy. I have been in that position for five years and since have obtained over 30 certifications. I have been named Officer of the Year for 2008.
Q. How long have you been writing?
A. My writing began in college while attending Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. It started as putting simple “Thoughts” on paper……idle words that I soon realized were reflections of my feelings. I began to collect them. I have three volumes of poetry. “Thoughts”, “Thoughts & Reflections”, and “Quiet Times” I began writing children stories for younger children who were beginning to read and always asking why? Questions about, “Why do we go to the dentist?, Why do birds fly south for the winter?, Why are lions the king of the jungle?”. I have written five children stories. I took on novels as a personal challenge and to answer questions about topics that most people would rather avoid. I have written five novels since I started three years ago. My only published work is “Family Secrets…..Lies & Alibi’s”.
Q..What inspired you to write “Family Secrets…..Lies & Alibis”?

A. There were a few things about the storyline that affected me personally and was shown on the television often. My book takes the topic a step further answering my questions, “What if?” and “Why?”. I don’t know my father’s sons and I have always wondered if our paths have crossed. My husbands sister worked with me for ten years before we knew they were brother and sister. My questions was what if, unknowingly, I dated or fell in love with my brother. What if….no one knew we were dating so they couldn’t warn me. What if we found out after the death of our father….but it was too late to step away from the relationship? Then the question would be why did our father not tell, why do families know about other children outside of the marriages or relationships and fail to introduce them. What happens when it’s too late. Those questions are in both my debut novel “Family Secrets…Lies & Alibi’s” and the sequel “A Different Kind of Love”.
Q. What motto do you live by that helps keep you inspired?
A. I am because I am……and for today it is the best I can be. I believe I am the only one who can control who I am or who I am to be. If I settle I have conceded that for today I am at my best. I rise the next day seeking again to be the best.
Q. Who are some of the authors you most admire? And why
A. I’m really bad at reciting best books by the authors I admire. I try not to read just one genre. Iyala Vanzant, TD Jakes…..inspirational. I need that in my life but I’m not limited to their writings. I love suspenseful writings…John Grisholm, James Patterson, Mary Higgins Clark, Walter Mosley, E.Lynn Harris, Omar Tyree, Valerie Wesley, and I could go on. I love books that I have to read because it keeps me engrossed and I can’t quite figure out where the author is taking me. If I can, I put the book down. I’m getting reacquainted with my reading as I now have more time to give to it. I have a never ending wish list with the new authors, Linda Herman, Tamara Grant, Allyson Deese, Victoria Wells, Maria Cook, Gayle Sloan, Hazel Mills……and again the list goes on.
Q. What is the greatest challenge of being an author?
A. I find myself writing as I love to read. I don’t like the book that gives pages and pages of description that has nothing to do with the story. As a writer I find it is necessary. The audience needs the painting to be complete with color and a character of its own. The descriptive pages bring that. Closing the story, not making the length of the book too long is sometimes difficult as well. Before I know it I’m at two hundred and fifty pages and just reaching the climax.
Q. What are your upcoming projects/works in progress?
A. I am in the process seeking to take “Family Secrets….Lies & Alibi’s to another level with it’s sequel. I hope to release the sequel “A Different Kind of Love” this summer. I am actively seeking an artist for my children stories and set to begin to write my next novel.
Q. What are your literary long term goals?
A. I would love as any aspiring author to be successful in my craft. I want to put my poetry on stage as a completed performance. Similar to when poetry was done “in the round”. I would love to have a film or a play based on one of my novels. I want to be a complete author. I don’t want to do all of what it takes to have a successful book but I do want to know all of what it takes to make it successful.
Q. Give me an example of your creativity.
A. I went to do a reading at a grammar school for a group of third graders. The school was supposed to pick the material and we “the celebrities” would read for an hour and then rotate groups. The class had a substitute who hadn’t picked a book because the ones in the class had been read by the students more than once. I was unprepared. I turned the class into a poetry writing class. Quickly I asked what they all liked to do in school, what subject or activity. Then we began writing line after line about the topic, the teacher, their reactions to the activity and why they liked it. It ended up being about ten lines, rhyming of course and very well written. The class was acknowledged by the principal for their creativity.
Q. Have you considered starting your own business?
A. Yes, I have a company that started from my writing poems. I Pen Designs. My site is www.ipendesigns.com. We handle events of all sorts. I do invitations, flyers, business cards, favors for the events, centerpieces, wedding consultations and so much more.
Q. How do you define success and how do you measure up to your own definition?
A. Success is a peaceful plateau. It’s a level of satisfaction. That’s why it doesn’t always last long. It’s a state of mind. We as a society want to put people where we feel they would be successful. Success comes with the internal desire to be satisfied. That’s why finance doesn’t equal success. Sometimes the poorest person is successful because they’re on a peaceful plateau of satisfaction. I believe I headed toward success.
Q. What are your greatest strengths?
A. I think my greatest strength is being objective. In order to be objective I have to always keep my mind open. I have to be willing to say I’m wrong, apologize when I’ve made errors or hurt someone. I have to be willing to admit I don’t know it all. This strength has allowed me to grow as a Christian, woman, mother, wife, employee, and as a writer.
Q. What are your greatest weaknesses?
A. I tend to be impatient. I want to see the results if not hurry them on. I’m always wishing for the peek at the crystal ball.
Q. Where do you see yourself five years from now?
A. Successful…..I’m putting things in place now for my departure from State employment. I want to continue teaching on the level of Law Enforcement Training. I want to do that as well as write full time.
Q. Tell me about a situation when your work was criticized and how that situation may have changed your literary path.
A. As a new author I had to learn that it’s like the birth of your child. Everyone understands it’s a new born baby but not everyone loves them like you do. Some will look under the blanket and see your child’s potential, their ability to grow and blossom into someone that you will craft and make the best, others will close the blanket up snuggly and tell you they just saw eight other cute babies and you’re in front of eight more. I think I would prefer the critiques to push my stroller a little in the direction I need to go….but that’s just how a mother would think.
Q. What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
A. Write….Write….Continue to write. Not every poem I’ve written is my best but I’ve found an audience that has embraced that poem that I keep hidden. I feel it will be the same for my novels and children stories. Know the game…..the rules. What’s acceptable and expected. Promote yourself and learn to push when you get pushed. There’s more than one road to successful writing. Find your road and don’t expect everyone to be on the road waving. It may be lonely but if successful writing is your goal you can’t get their complaining about those you meet on the way.

Family Secrets Lies & Alibi’s — Another 4 Stars!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Family Drama At Its Best!!, June 24, 2008
Review by- Author Tia Marie Boykins

DQ Mince may have passed on, but he has left quite a bit of disorder behind. Although he took great care to assure that his family would be provided for financially in the event of his untimely passing, he left them in the dark as to how to handle the results of his indiscretions while he was living. DQ’s oldest son Rell has been left as the executor of his estate, unbeknownst to Derek, who has been led to believe throughout his entire life that he was DQ’s ONLY son! The information is being kept confidential until the reading of the will, but that is not stopping everyone from trying to find out who’s getting what. Darryl, DQ’s gambling brother, needs Rell to help him re-establish money he lost in his company, but he doesn’t neccesarily want him to know that. Tonya, the deceitful wife, not only wants to know what DQ left her, but has been doing some detective work to try to find out what, if anything, was left to Rell’s mother, Nikki, the true love of DQ’s life. Nana, the matriarch of the family, is doing her best to hold it all together and keep everybody in check, but there’s only so much she can control. The secrets that DQ kept begin stirring up a storm that will soon reach the point of no return!

Nanette M. Buchanan has a page-turner on her hands for sure with this spicy, intriguing novel. She has found a way to connect with her readers using the most personal element possible- FAMILY! This book definitely takes family drama to the next level. I highly recommend this book for purchase, and I’m looking forward to the sequel. The excerpt looks great!

The Sketch of A Man

Filed under: books, author, african american author, suspensful roma — Nanette Buchanan @ 2:42 am

The Sketch of a Man

I watched you enter the room from a distance
you see you were a mere fantasy
Someone I envisioned only in my mind, never a reality.
From your shoulder length dreads to the soles of your feet
A sketch a silhouette, never really complete

I watched you enter the room from a distance
as a vision in a dimmed romantic light
Your aura brings erotic warmth
I close my eyes pleased to sketch with no sight
I await for your touch, your passionate embrace.
I use my hands tenderly outlining the features of your beautiful face.
Your skin, your pores, the rhythm as you breathe
My fingers touch your lips as you whisper, “Baby Please”

Your biceps, triceps, shoulders and chest,
The sketching of your sculptured body is my imagination at its best
I feel myself tremble in anticipation as your presence lays me on my back
I watch your moves as you join me
God’s creation, man, my man in fact.

Your hips rise slowly allowing your body to touch mine
The heat increases from the friction as we become entwined.
There is no sounds of discomfort though my vision is beginning to fade
I pull you closer wanting you, loving you, “I love when you love me this way”

Our pace is increasing as the sweat beads on my breast
My imagination is bringing on that climax, “Please make me say yes.”
My thighs are quivering, I want to take it slow
You’ve touched my g spot more than once,
I know I’m going to explode.

I close my eyes knowing we are both satisfied,
And though I watch you cross the floor I can still feel you inside.
The aura in the room is peaceful, as I doze off to sleep
You’ll always be that sketch of a man, never really complete
I hear the door closing behind you
A real man wouldn’t have to creep

Celebrating Father’s Day

Poppa

He grew up in the days when a dollar was a lot to spend
During the times when boys were never to young
for the responsibilities of men.
Talked about the miles he walked to make a days pay
Smiled as he thanked the Lord for each and every day.
He was quiet about the challenges of his manhood
and the sacrifices he made
Feeling less than a man realizing the games that ignorance played.
I look at him now in pictured memories
As he stood as Royal Wealth
His Sunday definition for himself
“I was clean as the Board of Health”
Tipped his hat with respect and winked his eye
Guaranteed us we would understand things better by and by
Poppa’s fuzzy head and chin had strains of gray
Never brushed or combed any particular way.
With a physic that was tall and lean
Did his own cooking….folks just would say it was mean
He passed on stories of relatives with names and faces I didn’t know
He spoke of the past proudly as if it were gold.
Poppa knew what a man was meant to be
As a great grandfather he was a man of simplicity
I wish he and I had spent more quality time
I thank God for the memories
And what Poppa instilled in my heart and mind.

My Latest Review-Family Secrets Lies & Alibi’s-Oosa Book Club

Review from OOOSA Books

Family…Secrets, Lies & Alibis
Category: Writing and Poetry

5.0 out of 5 stars The Family Drama

DQ Mince is a sophisticated and prosperous man. What woman wouldn’t want that? However, DQ is married to Tonya. Even so, he doesn’t let that hinder his relationship with Nikki. Both women have learned to accept the infidelity and their relationships eventually progress over time, producing children: Rell, Dershai, and Derek. The children grow up never knowing about one another, until…death strikes.

DQ’s death leaves his son Rell executor of his estate. Little does Rell know of all the secrets, lies, and alibis that were created by his father. Grandmother Nana is the only one that really knows the truth. Will Nana’s news be too unbearable for the family? Will it destroy what is left of the family?

“Family…Secrets, Lies & Alibis” is the best drama I’ve read in 2008! Nanette M. Buchanan really did a good job – enjoyed every page! It’s a page-turner! This novel reminds me of the drama within my own family, and I’m sure others will relate as well. If you like drama, you’ll love this book! I’m looking forward to reading more books in the future from Nanette M. Buchanan.

Someone call him “Nigga”

Filed under: books, author, african american author, suspensful roma — Nanette Buchanan @ 2:42 am

Someone called him “Nigga”, they yelled it from the door.

His grandmother heard it in her bedroom, the pet name ripped her to the core.

“Hold up”, he yelled from the window, “Need to tell Grams, I leaving.”

He approached his grandmother quietly, tears were flowing, he thought she was grieving.

“Gram, are you okay?  What has upset you so?”

She looked in her grandson’s face only hoping he could see their souls.

The souls of the heritage she knew, her raising was from the deep south,

The souls that would cringe from the pain they suffered from the whips and chains, as the Masta’s spit the name “Nigga’” from their mouths.

“Gram, why are you crying so?  Are you hurt, what can I get for you?”

The souls that took it all, in spite of it all, those who stood tall so you can do what you do.

“Gram, nod your head please speak to me, tell me what you need.”

The words of her grandson hit her heart he was a part of their seed.

She patted her face with her tattered dress, calming herself to speak.

He waited patiently, as the name “Nigga, yo Nigga” was spoken as though it was a beat.

His grandmother shook her head and wept again, her grandsons feelings were touched.

The love his grandmother had for him had been destroyed in one word, her teachings crushed.

She taught him from the time he was able to walk he was the descendant of warriors and kings.

If he answered to the call of “Nigga” or “boy” what did her teachings mean.

She taught him that although his father and uncles were not what they were deemed to be.

God would see her in the grave before she would let the streets take  another from the family tree.

“Nigga you comin’ or what? What you want me to do”

Her grandson spoke ever so softly, “Gram you know I love you.”

“Go head man and don’t yell no more……by the way my name is Raheem.”

He returned to his grandmother and opened his arms.

“Gram, tell me more about those kings.”
